Michael R. Jeffcoat

Michael JeffcoatMichael Jeffcoat believes that when people come to The Jeffcoat Firm needing assistance in dealing with a professional license or criminal matter, they deserve a zealous advocate who will fight for their rights and their future.

“We never ever forget that in some sense, we hold people’s lives in our hands,” he says. “We’re always mindful of that. Every person in this law firm understands that, and we make it our mission to help the people who have done us the honor of choosing to call us for help.”

Mr. Jeffcoat, a native of the Columbia area, founded the law firm in 1999. He comes from a long line of Jeffcoats in the Midlands of South Carolina, the family having initially put down roots there in 1775. His father and mother were both committed to public service in a variety of ways, and Jeffcoat recalls that their idealism had a real impact on him. The family still has a poster he made in fourth grade about his desire to become a lawyer when he grew up.

Education & Professional Background

Mr. Jeffcoat got his undergraduate degree at Wofford College in 1994, majoring in Political Economy and Philosophy, and then went to the University of South Carolina School of Law, where he received his J.D. in 1997. During law school, he participated in the Moot Court competition and had clerkships in the U.S. Attorney’s Offices in Columbia and Seattle, Washington, and also at the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office State Grand Jury.

After working in two law firms following his graduation from law school, Jeffcoat ventured out on his own to launch The Jeffcoat Firm in March of 1999.

Carolina Defense Lawyers

Michael Jeffcoat The defense practice at The Jeffcoat Firm encompasses a broad range of matters, including professional license defense and criminal matters, such as felonies, misdemeanors, and DUIs. What sets The Jeffcoat Firm apart from other law firms, Jeffcoat maintains, is its absolute commitment to client service.

“With every interaction, every phone call, and every time we walk into the courtroom, we work very hard every day to make sure that we are serving the client, that we are rolling out the red carpet, that we are going to the ends of the Earth to serve them and help them,” he says.

When people are facing a professional complaint or criminal charges, the deep prosecutorial resources of the government can be intimidating. But Jeffcoat has ample experience of his own in dealing with them — and he relishes the fight.

“I love going up against the government and winning,” he says. “I gain a lot of satisfaction from that.”

The Jeffcoat Firm’s commitment to service goes beyond the legal system. The Jeffcoat Firm supports various charities, including Harvest Hope Food Bank, the Lexington Interfaith Community Services (LICS) Food Bank, the nonprofit Nickelodeon Theatre, and River Bluff High School.

Mr. Jeffcoat is an avid offshore and fly fisherman and upland game bird hunter and is a member of the Nature Conservancy, Quail Forever, and the Congaree Riverkeeper, a local organization
